How Often Should My Pet Have a Wellness Exam?
Most healthy adult dogs and cats should have a wellness exam once a year. Puppies, kittens, senior pets, and pets with chronic conditions may need more frequent visits so our veterinarians can monitor growth, aging, medications, mobility, dental health, and changes in appetite or behavior.
Exotic pets may also need routine exams on a schedule that fits their species. Small mammals, birds, and reptiles can hide illness until a condition is more advanced, so regular checkups give us a chance to review diet, habitat, weight, and subtle health changes before they become urgent.
What’s Included in a Pet Wellness Exam?
A pet wellness exam includes a full physical evaluation and a conversation about your pet’s daily life, habits, and health history. We check your pet’s eyes, ears, teeth, skin, heart, lungs, abdomen, joints, weight, and overall body condition, looking for changes that may not be obvious at home.
Our veterinarian will also ask about appetite, energy level, bathroom habits, mobility, behavior, diet, medications, and any concerns you’ve noticed. From there, we make recommendations based on your pet’s age, species, breed, lifestyle, and risk factors.
Depending on your pet’s needs, your visit may include vaccines, parasite testing and prevention, bloodwork, nutrition counseling, dental care recommendations, behavior guidance, or screening tests. For exotic pets, we may also discuss habitat setup, lighting, humidity, diet, handling, and species-specific warning signs, since small mammals, reptiles, and birds often hide illness until symptoms become more serious.
