Dog Hip Dysplasia Treatment in Sacramento, CA

OPEN THURSDAY - FRIDAY 5:00pm to 9:00PM

Canine hip dysplasia is a painful and progressive condition that affects a dog’s ability to move comfortably. It begins when the hip joint – a ball and socket joint – develops abnormally, leading to hip joint laxity. This looseness causes wear and damage over time, resulting in degenerative joint disease or hip osteoarthritis.

Although most common in large-breed dogs and giant-breed dogs, even young dogs or smaller breeds can develop hip dysplasia. Genetics, weight gain, overexertion, and rapid growth are key risk factors. Keeping your dog at a healthy weight and following appropriate exercise routines may help prevent hip dysplasia or slow its progression.

Our dedicated team is here to provide urgent, high-quality care for your pets—because they’re family and deserve immediate attention when it matters most!

Comprehensive Hip Dysplasia Services at Our Sacramento Clinic

At Broadway Veterinary Hospital, we provide full orthopedic evaluations and dog hip dysplasia treatment tailored to the needs of both young and mature dogs. Our goal is to reduce discomfort, improve mobility, and enhance your pet’s health through every stage of life. Whether your dog needs early screening, pain management, or corrective surgical procedures, our team is here to help.

We offer diagnostics, medical management, and advanced interventions for hip dysplasia in dogs, using a combination of imaging, physical exams, and breed-specific insight to guide care. Our veterinarians have extensive experience treating large-breed dogs, giant-breed dogs, and active pets at risk for hip joint complications.

By catching issues early and beginning treatment promptly, we may be able to prevent the worsening of joint laxity, reduce hip pain, and delay the onset of degenerative joint disease. Every dog’s hip dysplasia journey is different, and our Sacramento clinic is here to help you navigate the right path forward with confidence.

Diagnosing Hip Dysplasia in Young and Mature Dogs

Clinical signs of hip dysplasia in dogs include:

  • Hip pain or stiffness

  • Reluctance to rise, run, or climb stairs

  • A “bunny-hopping” gait

  • Hind limb lameness or limping

  • Discomfort after rest or exercise

At Broadway Veterinary Hospital in Sacramento, we offer two proven methods to diagnose hip dysplasia and measure hip laxity in dogs. Early detection is essential – the sooner we identify the issue, the more options we have to manage pain and preserve mobility.

OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) Certification

For bred dogs or adult pets, we recommend the OFA method. We take a precise radiograph of your dog’s hip joint once they reach 2 years of age. The image is then reviewed by board-certified radiologists to assess for signs of hip dysplasia. To ensure proper positioning and a stress-free process, a general anesthetic is used during the procedure.

PennHIP Method

The PennHIP evaluation can diagnose hip dysplasia as early as 16 weeks of age, allowing earlier medical management or consideration for surgical procedures. This method uses three different radiographic views to measure joint laxity and assess the likelihood of future hip osteoarthritis. PennHIP is especially useful for young dogs, breed dogs, or dogs with athletic careers.

Treatment Options for Dog Hip Dysplasia

If your pet has already been diagnosed, we offer multiple paths to treat hip dysplasia depending on severity, age, and overall health.

Medical Management

In less advanced cases, we may begin with non-invasive support:

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for joint pain relief

  • Joint supplements to support cartilage health

  • Controlled activity and physical therapy

  • Weight management to reduce stress on joints

These approaches are ideal for young and mature dogs not yet needing surgery or as part of post-op care.

Surgical Procedures

In moderate to severe cases, surgery may offer the best long-term outcome:

  • Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO) – Removes the femoral head, eliminating bone-on-bone contact. Recommended for smaller dogs or those not suited for more invasive surgeries.

  • Triple Pelvic Osteotomy (TPO) – Repositions the hip joint to improve stability in young dogs before arthritis sets in.

  • Total Hip Replacement (THR) – Replaces the entire hip joint with prosthetic components, often the most effective option for dogs with chronic pain and advanced disease.

We will guide you through all available options and recommend the best approach for your dog’s condition and lifestyle.

“ Dr. Sam saved my baby...

My dog Aurora had mouth cancer. I found out and had such little time to schedule her surgery because it was so aggressive. I was referred to Dr. Sam by a friend. I live in Santa Barbara and made the trip up to Sacramento. I am still impressed how well everything went! She had to have almost half of her jaw removed. She is cancer free and looking amazing! Back to her puppy self. First picture is only 2 months after surgery! 2nd and 3rd are the day of. Dr. Sam saved my baby
