Our Sacramento clinic provides digital X-ray, CT imaging, and access to other imaging methods through trusted partners. These technologies allow our veterinarians to assess everything from bone fractures and bladder issues to internal cancer and heart disease with precision and care.

Our dedicated team is here to provide urgent, high-quality care for your pets—because they're family and deserve immediate attention when it matters most!

How Radiology Supports Diagnosis and Treatment

Modern radiology is a safe and powerful tool for both everyday diagnostics and advanced medical evaluations. We use X-rays and digital scans to visualize your pet’s internal structures and detect early signs of disease, injury, or abnormal growth.

Our radiology services help us:

  • Identify fractures, tumors, or arthritis
  • Evaluate heart disease and lung function
  • Detect cancer cells or internal development problems
  • Track recovery after injury or treatment
  • Diagnose GI obstructions or bladder stones
  • Support pre-surgical planning for better outcomes

These non-invasive tests produce detailed results with minimal discomfort and often no sedation, depending on the procedure.

Pet Scan Options Beyond X-Rays

For complex cases or when more detail is needed, we coordinate access to imaging options including:

  • CT scan / CT imaging – Ideal for detailed views of soft tissues, skulls, sinuses, and internal organs
  • MRI – Used to evaluate the brain, spinal cord, and joints in high-resolution detail
  • PET scan / Positron Emission Tomography – Helps detect cancer, assess metabolic activity, and monitor blood flow
  • Nuclear medicine – A targeted imaging technique that involves small amounts of radioactive energy to detect abnormal function

These services are performed under the care of licensed radiologists and may be referred to trusted professionals depending on your pet’s condition. We follow all safety guidelines recommended by the American College of Veterinary Radiology for veterinary practices. Our team also works closely with ultrasonography and tonometry services for comprehensive diagnostic evaluations.

What to Expect During a Pet Imaging Appointment

For most standard X-rays, your pet will be gently positioned on a narrow table, and the scan will take only a few moments. In some cases, sedation or anesthesia may be recommended to reduce movement and stress, especially for CT or MRI exams.

Your veterinarian will explain any prep instructions — for example, your pet may need to drink plenty of water before a scan, pause certain medications or herbal supplements, or fast for several hours. After the imaging is complete, we will review the results and provide a detailed consultation to discuss next steps, potential treatment, or further testing.

Some patients may feel a cold sensation during contrast studies, especially in tests that assess blood flow or metabolic activity.

“ Dr. Sam saved my baby...

My dog Aurora had mouth cancer. I found out and had such little time to schedule her surgery because it was so aggressive. I was referred to Dr. Sam by a friend. I live in Santa Barbara and made the trip up to Sacramento. I am still impressed how well everything went! She had to have almost half of her jaw removed. She is cancer free and looking amazing! Back to her puppy self. First picture is only 2 months after surgery! 2nd and 3rd are the day of. Dr. Sam saved my baby

Frequently Asked Questions About Veterinary X-Rays

When does my pet need an X-ray?

X-rays are recommended in a wide range of situations, from urgent cases like trauma, difficulty breathing, or suspected swallowed objects to more routine evaluations of joint disease, heart size, or abdominal organs. If your pet comes in limping, vomiting persistently, straining to urinate, or showing signs of respiratory distress, imaging is often one of the first steps we take to understand what’s happening and how to help.

Are pet X-rays safe?

Yes. Digital X-rays use a very low level of radiation, and modern veterinary equipment is designed to minimize exposure while producing high-quality images. The benefits of accurate, timely diagnosis far outweigh the minimal radiation involved. For most standard radiographs, the procedure takes only seconds per image, and your pet is not exposed to any lingering effects.

Will my pet need to be sedated for an X-ray?

Not always. Many pets tolerate routine X-rays comfortably with gentle positioning and the support of our team. However, sedation or light anesthesia may be recommended if your pet is anxious, painful, or needs to be held in a very specific position for diagnostic accuracy. For advanced imaging like CT or MRI, anesthesia is required to ensure your pet stays completely still throughout the scan. We will always discuss these options with you beforehand and choose the safest approach for your individual pet.

How quickly will I get results?

One of the major advantages of digital radiography is speed. Unlike traditional film X-rays, digital images are available almost immediately after the scan is complete. In most cases, your veterinarian will review the images with you during the same appointment and explain what they show. For complex cases referred for advanced imaging, a licensed radiologist will provide a formal interpretation that our team will discuss with you as soon as it is available.

What is the difference between an X-ray and an ultrasound?

X-rays are best suited for evaluating dense structures like bones and the overall size and shape of organs, as well as detecting foreign objects, masses, or fluid accumulation in the chest or abdomen. Ultrasound uses sound waves to produce real-time images of soft tissue structures, making it ideal for examining organ texture, blood flow, and internal movement such as a heartbeat or fluid around the organs. The two are often used together to give our team the most complete diagnostic picture. We offer both digital radiography and ultrasonography here at Broadway Veterinary Hospital.
