What Conditions Require Orthopedic Surgery for Pets?

Whether your pet was in an accident, suffered an injury from daily wear and tear, or has a developmental issue, surgery is a solution for musculoskeletal damage, which consists of the bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage. Some common orthopedic surgeries we perform help treat the following:

  • Fracture Repair: Broken bones can occur due to injury, trauma, disease, or stress on the bone. We utilize digital x rays to accurately assess the break before repairing it with internal plating or external splints.
  • Cruciate Ligament Repair: Pets can tear their anterior cruciate ligament (often called the CCL in animals) due to stress or sudden trauma. To stabilize the joint, we may perform a Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO), a gold-standard procedure that alters the biomechanics of the knee for long-term stability.
  • Hip dysplasia: Hip dysplasia is a common hereditary condition where the hip joint loosens, damaging bone and cartilage. In severe cases, a total hip replacement or femoral head ostectomy can restore mobility and prevent future degeneration.
  • Elbow Dysplasia: This developmental abnormality in the elbow joint causes lameness and arthritis. Early surgical intervention, sometimes using arthroscopy for a minimally invasive approach, can improve outcomes significantly.
  • Luxating patella: A medial or lateral patella luxation, or dislocated knee, occurs when the kneecap shifts out of its normal position in the femur. This orthopedic condition can be resolved with surgery to deepen the groove in which the kneecap sits, correctly align the patellar ligament to the tibial attachment, and tighten the knee joint capsule to prevent future luxation.
  • Osteoarthritis: This is a degenerative joint disease that causes the cartilage in your pet’s joints to deteriorate, leading to pain and inflammation. If other solutions are ineffective, orthopedic surgery can help alleviate discomfort and restore stability and function by repairing or replacing the joint and removing cartilage.

At Broadway Veterinary Hospital, we understand every pet is unique, so we work closely with you and your companion to determine if surgery is the right solution for your pet’s condition.

My dog Aurora had mouth cancer. I found out and had such little time to schedule her surgery because it was so aggressive. I was referred to Dr. Sam by a friend. What to Expect During Your Pet’s Orthopedic Surgery

Our compassionate team knows that surgery for a pet can be overwhelming for owners, so we work with you from the beginning to help you understand if an orthopedic procedure is necessary and what to expect. While we tailor every procedure to a pet’s unique needs, we generally follow the following steps for veterinary orthopedic surgery:

Consultation

Before the surgery, we start with a consultation where we examine your pet, listen to your story about their symptoms and behavior, and take any tests we need to diagnose the condition and determine the best treatment options. If your pet is healthy enough to undergo surgery and it’s the right treatment for them, we will explain the procedure step-by-step, along with the recovery process.

Human-Grade Anesthesia

On the day of surgery, we utilize advanced safety protocols. We prioritize pain management using a multimodal approach, including local blocks and injectable medications, alongside human-grade anesthesia to ensure the procedure is pain-free.

Procedure

Depending on the condition, surgery can take a few hours. To repair the affected area, our surgeons may use bone plates, screws, pins, or artificial joints. These materials stabilize the damaged area to restore functionality.

Post-Surgery and Recovery

After the procedure, we monitor your pet until they are awake. Recovery is crucial. When you take your pet home, they will need a calm environment. We will provide detailed instructions on physical therapy exercises, wound care, and managing your pet’s diet to prevent weight gain while their activity is restricted. Rehabilitation is often a key part of a successful outcome.

We will schedule follow-ups to monitor healing and ensure your pet stays healthy for years to come!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my pet too old to undergo orthopedic surgery?

Age is rarely a disqualifying factor on its own. Our veterinarians evaluate every patient individually based on their overall health, not just their birth date. If your senior pet has healthy heart and kidney function, corrective surgery for conditions like osteoarthritis or a cruciate ligament tear can significantly improve their quality of life and effectively eliminate chronic pain.

While some minor fractures or strains may improve with strict rest and splinting, major orthopedic injuries typically require surgical intervention to heal correctly. Without surgery, a fracture repair might fail, leading to malunion (improper healing), chronic lameness, or severe early-onset arthritis. Conditions like a complete ACL (CCL) tear will not heal on their own and require stabilization to prevent permanent joint damage.

Procedures like the Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) for knee stabilization have very high success rates, with roughly 90-95% of pets returning to normal or near-normal activity levels. Success depends heavily on following post-operative instructions, including restricted activity and physical therapy, to ensure the bone heals and the soft tissue recovers properly.

Most pets are encouraged to use the operated limb gently within 24 to 48 hours after surgery to prevent muscle atrophy and stiffness. However, this must be strictly controlled (short leash walks only). Full recovery and return to off-leash activity generally takes 8 to 12 weeks, depending on the severity of the injury and the speed of healing.

While complications are rare with an experienced veterinary surgeon, you should monitor the incision site daily. Watch for excessive swelling, discharge, sudden changes in pain management needs (whining or inability to settle), or if your pet stops using the leg entirely after previously walking on it. If you notice these signs, contact our hospital immediately.
